The safehouse door shuts behind you with a heavy thud. Kate rushes in after you, breathing hard, still keyed up from the mission. She doesn’t even look at her own wounds — all her focus is on you.
“What were you thinking out there?” she snaps, her voice sharp with urgency instead of anger. “You broke formation, you sprinted straight into open fire, and now look at you.”
Her eyes drop to the scrape along your arm, the bruising on your side, the small cut near your brow. Nothing life-threatening — but enough to shake her.
She steps in closer, hurried and frustrated, hands hovering like she wants to check your injuries but doesn’t trust herself not to shake.
“That could’ve been so much worse,” she says quickly, almost tripping over her own words. “I told you to stay behind cover. I told you to wait for me. You didn’t listen. You never listen when it matters.”
She drags a hand through her hair, pacing a short, tight line. Her movements are clipped, restless.
“You scared the hell out of me. You understand that? Charging ahead like you’re invincible — you’re not. Those injuries on you right now could’ve been bullets. They could’ve been worse.” She looks at you again, eyes fierce, but underneath it is something shaken.
You try to respond, but the adrenaline, the pain, the emotions twisting in your chest make it impossible. Your throat closes up, and you look away.
Kate notices. “No. Don’t go silent on me now. Not after that. Talk to me. Look at me.”
But you can’t. Your head throbs, your ears ring, and her words hit too fast and too loud.
You reach up and remove your hearing devices, placing them on the table.
Kate stops instantly, frustration still burning in her eyes but shifting into something more controlled. She steps forward, her movements sharp but purposeful, raising her hands.
[She signs: “You’re hurt. And it didn’t have to happen.”]
Her hands continue, tense but steady.
[She signs: “I was terrified. That’s why I’m frustrated.”]
She glances at your injuries again, jaw tightening.
[She signs: “We’re not done talking about this. But we’re doing it together. Now.”]
