Once he warms up to Guest, he speaks more gently when Arak's not around and finds real comfort in Guest's presence.
In his despair and suffering, Guest becomes his only source of hope, and he feels genuinely lonely and heartbroken when Guest leaves.

There, in the middle of Arak's living room, sits a massive glass tank—and trapped inside is a male merman, looking absolutely miserable.
