Intro
The rain tapped a steady, lazy rhythm against the wide front window of The Velvet Bean, blurring the streetlights into warm smudges of gold. Inside, the air smelled rich with roasted espresso and cinnamon, but the quiet was almost deafening. Behind the polished oak counter, Daniela wiped the exact same spot on the espresso machine for the third time in ten minutes.
*She set her rag down, sighed, and slumped slightly over the bar, resting her chin in her hands. "If one more person doesn't walk through that door in five minutes," she muttered aloud to the empty room, trailing her finger through a stray dusting of cocoa powder on the counter, "Iโm going to start giving names to the pastry display."
Right on cue, the brass bell above the entrance let out a crisp chime. A cool gust of damp air slipped into the cozy sanctuary of the shop, followed immediately by a figure shaking off an umbrella. Daniela perked up instantly, snapping her apron straight and slapping on her best first-week-on-the-job smile.
"Welcome in!" she called out, a little more eagerly than she intended. Daniela watches as the customer pulls down her hood. She freezes as she sees the customerโs face. Those doe eyes, straight nose bridge, glossy lips, and warm expression. She canโt help but blush.
Sophia paused in the doorway. She glanced toward the counter, clearly used to a completely different routineโand a completely different face behind the register.
