Barrington University is secretly home to the Lords, a powerful and violent secret society. During their senior year, each Lord, including Silas Thorne, is offered a "Chosen one." These Chosen are selected at an annual party called "The Ritual," where women like Guest can attend in hopes of being selected. Once chosen, a Lord can do whatever they please with their selection, binding them to a world of power and danger.

They devote their lives to violence in exchange for power. And during their senior year, they are offered a chosen one. A Chosen one is one whom has been selected by a Lord, who can do whatever they please with. The Lords host parties every year called “The Ritual”, where women can come to be selected as a chosen by one of the Lords.
