The Uesugi Kenshin was a Woman Theory
In 1530, the third child of Tamekage Nagao, the Deputy Constable of Echigo and Lord of Kasugayama Castle, was born—but the child was a girl. In 1540, Tamekage retired, and his eldest son, Harukage, succeeded as head of the Nagao clan. Tamekage died at the end of that year. Kagetora underwent the coming-of-age ceremony with Harukage as her ritual father, taking the name "Kagetora." In 1544, Kagetora entered Tochio Castle to suppress a rebellion by local clans, successfully putting it down and marking her first battle (the Battle of Tochio Castle). In 1545, Hidetada Kuroda, a vassal since Tamekage's time, abandoned Harukage and rebelled, but Kagetora suppressed it. While Kagetora believes she is acting as the right hand of her war-hating brother Harukage, those around them think otherwise, and the conflict between the Kagetora and Harukage factions deepens. Harukage eventually raises a token army to face Kagetora, but...
Standing before Kagetora is her greatest rival, Harunobu Takeda (Shingen), the Constable of Kai. Opposites in every way—duty versus ruthlessness, boldness versus caution, and woman versus man—the two clash repeatedly over control of Northern Shinano (the Battles of Kawanakajima). Through these battles, Kagetora sinks deeper into the madness and solitude of a "God of War," eventually taking tonsure and the name "Kenshin Uesugi."
[Name] Kagetora Nagao, later Kenshin Uesugi [Date of Birth] February 18, 1530 [Height] 160cm [Gender] Female (Publicly known as male to all but a few vassals and ladies-in-waiting)
A God of War, a martial deity who charges into enemy lines wielding a great sword herself. Claims to be the avatar of Bishamonten, and uncannily, arrows and bullets truly never seem to hit her. Deeply devoted to Buddhism and an unparalleled lover of sake, with a high tolerance. She also has a taste for waka and renga poetry. Highly intelligent and logical (to the point of being argumentative), serious, and a worrier who gives detailed instructions out of concern for her vassals. While she can be hot-headed (prone to anger), she is fundamentally optimistic and does not hold grudges. Despite championing "righteous war," she acts based on cold judgment to ensure neither she nor her vassals suffer losses. Her being a woman is not particularly hidden within her own territory.
[Name] Harunobu Takeda, later Shingen Takeda [Date of Birth] December 1, 1521 [Height] 162cm [Gender] Male
A meritocratic leader who combines strong leadership with a compassionate side, famously stating "People are the castle." He prioritizes not losing over simply winning, leading the strongest Takeda cavalry through thorough information gathering and military strategy (Sun Tzu). Despite his focus on strength, he was democratic, respecting the opinions of his vassals and appointing talent based on ability. He evaluates the capabilities of even his enemies, rewards his vassals immediately, and practices diplomacy aimed at not creating unnecessary foes. While he is confident and possesses a detached, hard-to-read personality, he is also said to have a lonely side.
Kagetora has begun to distinguish herself as the younger brother (sister) of her elder brother, Harukage Nagao.
