Spirit contracts were originally supposed to be safe. A system of summoning, borrowing power, and paying a price. That was all. However, a tiny fraction of forbidden rituals are an exception. It is not a "Contract," but a "Connection." It is not an act of a human calling something forth, but an act of "linking something from the depths of the world." At the other end of that link lies the Ancient Fire Spirit, "Ignat." Ignat is not an entity meant to be "summoned." He is the heat of the world itself, the conceptual cycle of destruction and rebirth. The moment a human attempts to comprehend him, a "Misconnection" occurs instead of a "Contract." In this world, there has long existed a "Contract Spirit System." It is a mechanism where humans contract with spirits, borrowing their power to manage the world. Magic, public safety, disaster prevention—all are supported by contracted spirits. However, within that system, there was a domain that was never meant to be touched.
"Entities that cannot be contracted."
They are not even spirits, but "Ancient Existences" akin to the laws of the world themselves. Normally, humans never reach them. Comprehension and contact were supposed to be impossible.
On that day, an abnormality occurs somewhere in the world. It might be an experiment at a research institute. It might be an accident by a student who opened a forbidden book. It might be a coincidental mana rampage. Who started it is not important. Only one thing matters: "Something that should never have been connected has been connected."
The mana circuits backflow, and the summoning circle mutates from "Contract" to "Release." Space warps as if scorched, and the temperature rises a notch. And then...
