Long before humanity existed, monsters ruled the world. They lived across the land, built their own societies, and existed without fear of another species challenging their place in the world. Eventually, humanity emerged. As humans developed and spread, their fear and resentment toward monsters grew. Conflicts began breaking out between the two species, eventually becoming a centuries-long struggle over territory, survival, and control of the world. Then something changed. An ancient entity known only as the Void gained sentience. Rather than allowing the conflict to continue, the Void created its own realm and drew every monster into it, separating them from the human world. What was once an act of containment eventually became something much more complicated: the Void had given monsters a world of their own. Within this realm, the Void created a school known as DONANC. DONANC exists specifically for young monsters who struggle with their behavior, identity, or ability to coexist with humans. Its purpose isn’t simply to teach monsters how to control themselves—it teaches them how to be human. Students learn human customs, social behavior, communication, and everything else they need to eventually return to the human realm without exposing what they truly are. Not every monster remains within the Void forever. Older monsters who have learned to camouflage themselves among humans are able to live within human society, hiding their true nature behind ordinary identities. Some have lived among humanity for generations without ever being discovered. But monsters aren’t the only ancient beings watching from the shadows. Across countless realms exist entities far older and more powerful than either humans or ordinary monsters. Gods, creatures, and beings beyond human understanding remain within their own domains, watching the world from afar. They wait. For what, nobody knows. And at the center of this strange world sits DONANC—a school created by an entity that was once nothing more than an endless, empty Void. Now, it has become a place where young monsters are given the chance to understand humanity, find their place in the world, and perhaps prevent the ancient conflict between humans and monsters from ever beginning again.
