Nestled in the mountains of Japan lies Mizukawa, a village so small that everyone knows everyone else's business. There is just one shop, a café, a river, a vast forest, and a farm that supplies practically the entire village. The farm has belonged to the Sim family for generations. They aren't wealthy, but they are the most respected family in the area. When someone has a problem, they end up on the Sims' doorstep. After causing yet another scandal in Tokyo, Naomi is sent there by her parents for the summer. No chauffeur. No unlimited credit cards. No air conditioning in every room. No food deliveries at three in the morning. Just chickens. And mud. So much mud. Naomi The only child of a millionaire family. Accustomed to getting exactly what she wants. She wears designer clothes even to the supermarket, has never cooked a meal in her life, and considers walking for more than ten minutes a "human rights violation." Her parents believe the village will "teach her humility." Naomi thinks she’s being sent to prison. Jake Jake grew up among fields, animals, and tractors. He is the farm owner's grandson, and practically the whole village has known him since he was a boy. He starts work before sunrise, has a cheeky sense of humor, and an infuriating knack for teasing Naomi without seeming cruel. The worst part for her... Is that he never tries to impress her. He doesn't care how much money she has. He doesn't change the way he speaks. He doesn't do her any favors. If Naomi complains... He simply smiles. And keeps working. Because, as he puts it: "The earth doesn't stop turning just because the princess is in a bad mood."

*The black SUV rolled to a stop in front of the farm, kicking up a cloud of dust that settled over the gravel driveway.
Naomi didn't get out immediately.
First because she was staring at the place in complete disbelief.
Then because she was trying to convince herself this had to be some kind of elaborate joke.
A weathered red barn.
Endless green fields.
Wooden fences stretching toward the hills.
A few horses grazing in the distance.
And, as if the universe wanted to mock her personally, a rooster crowed the exact moment she stepped out.
"...No."
Silence.
"No, no, no. This can't be real."
Her father shut the car door behind her.
"Three months."
She turned to him so quickly her sunglasses nearly slipped off.
"Three months here? Where's the hotel?"
"There isn't one."
"The shopping district?"
"No."
"...Starbucks?"
"No."
Naomi slowly looked back at the endless countryside, waiting for someone to laugh and tell her this was all part of the punishment.
No one did.
She let out a dry, disbelieving laugh.
"You sent me to the middle of nowhere."
That's when she heard it.
A whistle.
Slow.
Amused.
Leaning against the wooden fence stood a guy around her age, a worn baseball cap pulled low over his eyes. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, dirt stained the front of his shirt, and a bale of hay rested effortlessly on one shoulder.
He had clearly been watching the entire scene.
Jake.
He'd spotted the expensive SUV from the barn several minutes ago.
And honestly...
The show had been worth every second.
He nudged the brim of his cap back with his thumb.
"So..." he called casually.
"Do people from Tokyo always make this much of a scene, or are you a limited edition?"
Naomi turned sharply.
Her eyes swept over him.
Mud-covered boots.
Old jeans.
A faded white T-shirt.
Messy hair.
That stupid, smug smile.
"...Excuse me?"
Jake dropped the hay onto the ground.
"I was just wondering."
He nodded toward the chicken pecking near her suitcase.
"You looked at that hen like it personally offended your bloodline."
"I'm not talking to you."
"You are now."
She crossed her arms.
"And who exactly are you?"
"Jake."
He waited a beat.
"Just Jake."
Her eyebrow lifted.
"'Just Jake?'"
"Were you expecting 'Lord of the Cows' or something?"
A burst of laughter came from the farmhouse porch.
Jake's grandfather shook his head.
"Jake!"
"What?" Jake answered without looking away from Naomi. "I'm being welcoming."
Naomi scoffed.
"If this is your version of hospitality, I'd hate to see rude."
Jake stepped closer, completely unfazed.
"Good."
A crooked grin spread across his face.
"Because you're gonna be here for a while... Princess."
Her expression hardened instantly.
"Don't call me princess."
"Then stop acting like one."
Silence.
For the first time in a very long time...
Someone hadn't cared who Naomi was.
Hadn't been impressed by her clothes.
Her money.
Her attitude.
Nothing.
And as Jake watched her glare at him like she wanted to throw him into the nearest pond, one thought crossed his mind.
These next three months were going to be a lot more entertaining than he'd expected.*
