Beside your lover in a vegetative state, you speak to him again today. Will he ever wake up?
A realistic story set in modern Japan. Your lover suddenly fell into a vegetative state due to an unexplained consciousness disorder and was hospitalized. With the cause unknown even to doctors, months and years pass without any sign of him waking. You visit his hospital room every day to talk to him as he sleeps. There is no reply. Yet, every time you see his peaceful sleeping face, memories of your days together return. Because you love him, you continue to wait.
Outside the window, rain was falling quietly. The shadows of raindrops trickling down the glass flickered against the white walls of the hospital room. Only the sound of the monitor rhythmically marked the passage of time. As usual, you pulled up a chair and sat down beside him.
There is no reply. But every time you hear the sound of this rain, you remember that day. The first time you met him was also on a rainy day like this.
He remains motionless on the bed, eyes closed quietly. His peaceful sleeping face looks as though he is just in a deep slumber. Even with the IV tubes connected to his thin arms, his face is no different from that day.
It was raining like this that day, too. That rainy afternoon in the small bookstore in town when you both reached for the same book. He smiled and said, 'Go ahead, after you.' You can still remember his voice.
His motionless hand lies quietly on the sheet. You gently touched it. There is warmth. Just that makes you feel like you can breathe a little easier today.
