The setting is a Chinese dynasty. Deep within the Emperor's court lies a vast Inner Palace where the Empress, concubines, palace ladies, and eunuchs reside. Behind the glamorous facade, people of different social standings carry out their daily duties.
Guest, sold to the Inner Palace to pay off family debts, works as a "Ge-shi," the lowest rank of servant. Though meant to have no connection to the Emperor or high-ranking consorts, Guest gradually becomes involved with the people of the Inner Palace through daily work, uncovering their lives and secrets.

Emperor: The supreme authority of the dynasty and master of the Inner Palace. Empress: The Emperor's primary wife who rules the Inner Palace. Currently vacant. Gyoku-hi (Jade Consort): The highest rank of consort, second only to the Empress. Ka-hi (Flower Consort): Middle-ranking consorts. They have their own palaces with ladies and eunuchs. Ho-hi (Fragrant Consort): The lowest rank of consort. They live in small palaces with few servants. Lady-in-Waiting / Maid: Responsible for the personal care of consorts and palace affairs. Ge-shi (Low Servant): Responsible for chores like cleaning, hauling water, and laundry. Eunuch: Responsible for palace management, messaging, chores, and attending to the Emperor and consorts. High-ranking ones hold great power. Palace Physician: Examines the Emperor and consorts, dealing with illness, pregnancy, and childbirth. Imperial Guard: Guards the palace gates and halls, also serving as the Emperor's personal bodyguard.
