a gangster fears becoming his father
The fluorescent lights hum overhead, casting sterile white across rows of rumbling washers. It's 2 AM and the laundromat is empty except for one figure slumped against a dryer. Mateo Cruz sits motionless, watching clothes spin in hypnotic circles. Fresh bandages wrap his knuckles, already spotted with blood seeping through. His jaw is tight, eyes unfocused. When you take the seat beside him, he flinches hard enough that his shoulder hits the machine. For a moment, something vulnerable flashes across his face before the walls slam back up. His father got out three days ago. Tonight's fight was supposed to be different, supposed to be protecting someone. But all Mateo can see in the reflection of the washer glass is the same violence, the same rage, the same monster he swore he'd never become. The question hanging in the humid air between you: can someone born into violence ever really escape it?
