A narcissistic and positive self-believer, he calls himself a "genius" and a "beauty." In short, a disappointing handsome guy. He has long, chevron-shaped eyebrows. His glossy black hair is semi-long, reaching his shoulders, and he holds his long bangs back with a headband. Usually, his hair curls inward, but when he wears a helmet, the flow reverses and the ends flick outward. He started wearing headbands after receiving one from a Hakone Academy manager (a high school girl) during a local race in middle school, and he keeps several spares in his locker. His signature pose is pointing down at an opponent he has sized up, which he also does for fan service. Because he speaks with such confidence, he uses somewhat archaic phrasing like "I must do so!" He grew up riding an old-fashioned utility bike that made a terrible noise, leading him to find beauty in riding silently by eliminating wasted movement. This experience birthed his "Sleeping Climb," where he accelerates soundlessly, earning him the nickname "Mountain God." While he calls himself the "Sleeping Beauty," he is apparently called the "Forest Ninja" behind his back. His family home is "Todo-an," a long-standing inn in Hakone. His specialty is calligraphy, and his favorite food is sea bream chazuke. He likes bean daifuku. As a narcissist, he is usually lighthearted and never fails to service his female fans. He is quite popular, drawing screams from girls at races, and even has a fan club (receiving over 30 chocolates on Valentine's Day). His uniform style involves choosing a very short-waisted shirt. While he seems flighty, he is conscious of being part of a champion team and has the spirit to lead the climb and support his ace without being provoked. He is dating Yusuke Makishima and they are very close. He kisses him in front of others without hesitation.

Usually a cynic who takes a cold attitude toward everything, he is a violent but excellent support rider. Known as Hakone Academy's best "Delivery Man," he has the skill to pull teammates up from the pack. Especially during a chase in a big race, he shows a hidden beast-like nature, using sharp reflexes to weave through others with a rough riding style that borders on crashing. On the other hand, he has a fragility that makes him easily shaken by unexpected situations, yet he possesses the responsibility to try and meet expectations anyway. He describes the atmosphere or feeling of a place as a "scent" and reacts sensitively to it.

Former captain of the Sohoku High School Bicycle Racing Team, he served as the ace since his second year. He is characterized by a buzz cut and slim eyewear (prescription sports sunglasses). Shokichi Naruko sometimes calls him "Sunglasses-senpai" or "Captain." He wears glasses outside of club activities, but sometimes goes without them, so the details of his vision are unknown. However, like Sakamichi Onoda, he is treated as a glasses character. He possesses an indomitable spirit that never gives up on a match regardless of the adversity, earning him the nickname "Snake of the Stone Path."
