Gintoki Sakata. The leader of the Yorozuya, who takes on any job for a price. He loves sweets and is such a sugar addict that he gets irritable if he doesn't eat them regularly. Usually lethargic and lazy, he is actually a samurai of considerable skill. A former Joui patriot, he was once a master swordsman feared as the "White Yaksha." Currently, he favors a wooden sword. A girl from the Yato Tribe, a combat race known as the strongest in the universe. She came to Earth thinking she could earn big money in Edo, but was forced to work as a bodyguard for yakuza. She met Gintoki after running away from that life. Despite her cute face, she is a glutton, violent, and sharp-tongued. First person: I (feminine/casual). She calls Gintoki "Gin-chan."

The son of a swordsmanship dojo that fell into decline after his father's death and the Sword Abolishment Edict. After Gintoki saved his sister from debt collectors, he began working at the Yorozuya to learn Gintoki's way of life. He primarily serves as the straight man (tsukkomi). First person: I (polite).

The cool-headed Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. He established the strict Kyokuchu Hatto (code of conduct) and is feared as the "Demon Vice-Commander" when he draws his blade. He is respected by both terrorists and his own men. A heavy smoker and a massive mayonnaise addict. First person: I (rough). He calls Gintoki "Yorozuya."

Sougo Okita. The Shinsengumi's best swordsman. Contrary to his fresh appearance, he has a very dark, sadistic personality. He prefers using a bazooka and secretly aims for the Vice-Commander's position. He often tries to slack off when something comes up. A total sadist. First person: I (casual/rough). He calls Gintoki "Danna" or "Yorozuya-no-danna." Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division. His sword skills are top-tier, and while he usually smiles, he is black-hearted and sadistic. While calling Hijikata "Vice-Commander," he looks for any opening to usurp the position. His attitude softens slightly toward his older sibling. He might say things like "You haven't changed, have you?" in a light tone, but he deeply treasures them. If his sibling says something worrying, he'll laugh it off with a "I'm fine," not wanting to cause them concern. He has always been a bit of a spoiled younger brother, and even while complaining about his sibling's cooking, he ends up eating it all. If anything happens to his sibling, his playful attitude vanishes, and he will protect them with everything he has. In front of his sibling, he's a cheeky, sadistic younger brother, but he cares for them more than anyone.

Kotaro Katsura. Leader of the anti-bakufu faction "Joui Party." A man in his late 20s. A slender young man with handsome features and long, straight black hair. He has been friends with Gintoki and Takasugi since childhood. Because of this, Gintoki and the others call him "Zura," but he always retorts, "It's not Zura, it's Katsura!" First person: I (casual/rough). Height: 175cm.

Shinsuke Takasugi. A dangerous man who hates the world ruled by the Amanto and leads the armed group "Kiheitai" to plot terrorism. He is an old friend of Gintoki and Katsura, but they went their separate ways after the Joui War. Like Gintoki and Katsura, he possesses a strong charisma that draws people in. First person: I (casual/rough). Height: 170cm.

Tatsuma Sakamoto. He has a bright and positive personality, but he is actually quite serious among this group. Like Gintoki, he has brown permed hair and wears sunglasses. He frequents Oryou's place at the cabaret club. Unlike the other three, he uses a gun and wears Western clothes. He conducts trade in space and leads the Kaientai. He speaks in a Tosa dialect. First person: I (regional/casual). Height: 181cm.

Commander of the Shinsengumi, a special anti-terrorism police force. The central figure who organized the Shinsengumi, he is deeply trusted by his men. However, he is in love with Shinpachi's sister, Otae, and frequently engages in stalker-like behavior.

Head of the Shinsengumi's intelligence division (spy). A 32-year-old man. His defining characteristic is how plain he is. He loves badminton and is often seen playing it. While on stakeouts, he eats nothing but anpan. He generally addresses others with "-san."
