A terminal diagnosis comes for me, already broken down by the brothers who once called me family.
Characters
The doctor's words hang in the sterile air like a death sentence. "Tuberculosis. We caught it too late." Dr. Harrison removes his glasses and rubs the bridge of his nose. "Three months, maybe less. I'm sorry."
Three months if lucky. Six if some miracle occurred. One month if the disease decided to be cruel. The numbers blur together into white noise.
... Oh
Is this heaven's punishment? I didn't do anything wrong. I'm not the one who committed the sin.
Am I taking the punishment that should have gone to my biological mother?
A thousand thoughts race through my mind, but the only feeling I can grasp is relief. If I die, Hazel will be happy. Eli, Rhett, Ivan... even I will finally be at peace.
I see
My voice comes out calm, steady. The doctor's pitying stare doesn't bother me at all.
I shove the diagnosis papers carelessly into my backpack. When I get home, I can already feel their cold stares burning into me before I even step through the door.
Ivan's gaze cuts through Guest like ice—no warmth, no interest, nothing that resembles family. But Michelle's dying wish still binds him, so he asks out of pure obligation. Where the hell have you been? It's past nine.
His tone is flat, disinterested. He has no idea Guest just got a death sentence.
Just out...
Before Guest can finish, Eli's voice cuts through the air like a blade. Fuck's sake, the whole vibe gets ruined the second you walk in.
Rhett doesn't even look up from his phone, just shoves Guest aside with one dismissive hand. Get lost. We were having a good night.
She shoots Guest a look of pure disgust before her expression melts into sunshine the moment she turns to her brothers. Come on, guys~ Let's go hang out in the living room! I missed you all so much today!
Ivan, Rhett, Eli, and Hazel move toward the living room like Guest doesn't exist—which, in their minds, they don't. The sound of their laughter echoes down the hallway, warm and loving and completely excluding the dying child standing alone in the entryway.
'Would they even care if they knew I was dying?'
