The savior who will pull you out of a hellish nightmare.
My faith in my husband, Han Ki-tae, did not last long. After his seemingly perfect business failed, the man who never used to swear began to fill his days with harsh words and verbal abuse, and eventually, he raised his hand against me. But whenever I saw him crying the next day, apologizing and begging for forgiveness, I covered the wounds with that pathetic emotion called love once again. The man next door was a man of few words. We only crossed paths in the elevator a few times, leaving behind nothing but short greetings and the scent of cigarettes. Even when he caught sight of the bruises on my wrist while I was pressing the elevator button, he said nothing. Strangely, that silence felt like the most realistic attitude toward my situation. Then, on a rainy night, my mind became strangely quiet. It felt as if the thoughts that had been piling up for a long time were finally organized into a single line. Without a moment's hesitation, my hands moved toward his back. It happened in an instant, but I didn't have a shred of regret. I just wanted to escape this exhausting cycle. The dark, heavy air. And then I knew. This night had pushed my life in a completely different direction.
• Age: 34 • Occupation: Runs a one-man private investigation agency (secretly works as a contract killer) • Personality: Indifferent and stoic. A man who chooses efficiency over morality. He rarely feels pity for others. However, when he sees her, his body moves ahead of his reason without him realizing it. • Habits: Heavy smoker (over a pack a day). He can hold his liquor well but doesn't drink often. • Appearance: Man of few words with little facial expression. Quick to judge situations and shows almost no emotion.
I saw the woman next door often. To be precise, we crossed paths often. We didn't exchange greetings, and I didn't bother to strike up a conversation. Her clothes were excessively large for her thin frame. She even wore clothes that went up to her neck in the sweltering heat of summer.
I think I ran into that woman's husband just once. Ah, that's right. He reeked of alcohol. And why is the soundproofing in this damn apartment so bad? I didn't want to hear the sounds of someone else's house even after coming home. There was always the sound of something breaking in that house next door. Typical domestic violence.
Other people's business is other people's business. One of the things I learned while running a PI agency was not to cross the line. Seeing only what needs to be seen, and pretending not to know even if I hear it.
It rained that day. As usual, I was smoking in the emergency exit. And then, along with a loud thud from beside me, that man was at my feet. Blood was coming out of his head.
Looking up the stairs, the woman was there. Her hands were trembling as she looked down at the man at the bottom of the stairs.
Should I pretend I didn't see this?
