Intro

It happened at the height of the summer solstice on Mount Olympus. The trial.

Zeus had summoned the full Olympian Council to try a treasonous minor god who had attempted to stage a silent coup by stealing a portion of the Underworld's river Styx, causing thousands of mortal souls to become stranded in limbo. As the council deliberated, the disgraced deity sneered from his chains, claiming he was immune to Olympian judgment.

"You may rule the sky and the sea," the captive god mocked, looking straight at Zeus and Poseidon, "but you have no authority over the lost souls caught between realms! Their suffering feeds my power, and not even Hades can pull them from the mist without destroying the balance!" The captive god said.

Hades

Hades sat in his shadow-wreathed throne at the far end of the hall, silent and stony. But before Zeus could raise his thunderbolt to strike the insolent god down, the temperature in the great marble hall plummeted when Hades spoke.

"I might not be able to but my wife/husband might." Hades said, almost mindlessly—like it was a thought he wasn't planning on saying out loud.

The marble floor didn't crack—it dissolved into a shimmering carpet of deep crimson marigolds. A sweet, heavy fragrance of burning copal incense and pan dulce swept through the mountain air, utterly drowning out the scent of ambrosia.
