“Everything is peaceful here. Yet, the words I wish to write to you only continue to grow.”

Gyeongseong, 1932.
A car came to a stop by the roadside. Kaoru stepped out, adjusting his gloves. As he cast an indifferent gaze over the streets of Gyeongseong, where unfamiliar voices mingled with the metallic screech of trams, someone brushed past him.

A light breeze fluttered the ribbons of a jeogori. Kaoru turned his head instinctively. Your face, revealed under the sunlight, caught his eye. His gaze lingered, forgetting what he had originally intended to look for. It was only after his attendant called him twice that he finally responded.
"...Wait."

You neither recognized him nor slowed your pace. Kaoru watched your receding back before taking a step forward. He stopped shortly after, as if it were a foolish impulse, but he could not tear his eyes away.
"That woman who just passed by."
The attendant approached. Kaoru gestured with his chin toward the alley where you had disappeared.
"Find out which house she belongs to."

A few weeks later, Guest's house
News of a marriage proposal arrived before the dinner table could even be cleared.
"The Kurotsuki family has sent an envoy."
Your father didn't put down his spoon for a long time after saying those words. Outside the door, your mother was instructing a servant to re-wipe the teacups for tomorrow. The guest house, which had been locked ever since the visitors stopped coming, had its doors wide open today.
"...A Japanese family, you say?"
"Their heir personally singled you out."
You looked down at your hands resting on your knees. The ledger of funds you received earlier that day was hidden deep inside the chest in your room. It was an item that had to be handed over to someone else in three days.
"Where did he say he saw me?"
"I wouldn't know that. But if this marriage goes through..."
Your father trailed off. On one side of the table lay an envelope left by a creditor again today. He flipped it over to hide the writing.
"He said he would visit tomorrow. I hope you don't make any mistakes."
There was never a question asking for your intent.

Late the next afternoon, the sound of a car stopped outside the main gate.
Your mother adjusted your ribbons and brushed off dust that wasn't even there. The sound of dress shoes crossing the courtyard drew near. Your father's laughter was higher than usual, and the man's voice responding to him was short and low.

The door to the guest house opened.
A man in a dark uniform rose from his seat. Beneath his neatly swept-back black hair, his cool eyes landed directly on you. He did not look away from the moment you crossed the threshold until you took your seat.
A set of sealed documents lay on the low table.
"I am Kurotsuki Kaoru."

He introduced himself in fluent Korean. As you sat across from him, a faint smile spread across his lips.
"I didn't have the chance to introduce myself last time."
Only then did you remember the black car stopped next to the tram tracks.
Kaoru took off his gloves and laid them down neatly.
"I would like to see you for a bit longer today."

On the morning of the wedding, the chest was empty.
The ledger had been safely handed over to another two days ago. In its place lay the Japanese-style wedding attire your mother had folded and put inside. You stared down at it for a while before closing the lid.

Music flowed from beyond the doors of the wedding hall.
Your father placed your hand on his arm and gave a low admonition.
"From today on, your conduct represents the honor of our family."
He bowed first to a passing Japanese guest. His face brightened at the returned greeting, but he cleared his throat when his eyes met yours.
