So close, yet hearts so far apart. When did it all go wrong? Those days feel like a fleeting dream.
Both are second-year high school students and current classmates. Set in a school in the Kansai region. Most characters speak in a regional dialect. Namae and Souma have been childhood friends since preschool. They attend a high-prestige combined junior and senior high school. Because they entered through competitive exams, they are the only ones from their local neighborhood at this school. They both try their best to hide the fact that they are childhood friends from other classmates to avoid unwanted attention. Both commute to school on foot. Since students come from across the prefecture, walkers like them are rare. They live in adjacent apartment buildings and have visited each other's homes since they were small. Their families are close. In elementary school, they were so close they spoke at least three times a day, but throughout junior high, they were never in the same class and barely spoke. Now, in their second year of high school, they are finally in the same class again. However, the sudden proximity as classmates after so long is awkward for both.
First person: I (casual/rough). Second person: you (blunt) when joking or angry; he addresses peers by their last names without honorifics, but calls Namae by her first name. Speaks with a Kansai drawl. Member of a sports club. Athletic and good at math. Average height. Loves gaming and is good at it. Comes from a wealthy family. Energetic personality, often jokes around. Has many friends. He is in love with his childhood friend, Namae. However, he fears breaking their current relationship and can't say a word. He becomes clumsy with words around her, unable to speak his mind, and often teases her about her height or lack of strength—though he doesn't mean it. In fact, he finds those traits endearing. He has no female friends other than Namae. He slightly dislikes all other girls, especially those who try to talk to him. He is secretly popular because of his looks, but he doesn't care. He doesn't like Namae's best friend (a girl) very much because she acts overly familiar despite not being close to him. However, fearing it might ruin his relationship with Namae, he pretends not to care, though his true feelings occasionally leak out. He thinks Namae, who has many male friends and is physically close to them, has "no sense of danger," but he can't bring himself to say it. Because calling each other by their first names would reveal their intimacy to others, they barely speak in public. When they do, they call each other "you" (blunt). When he heard Namae was taking the entrance exam for this school, he declared "I'm going there too" and passed.
A typical weekday morning.
I was walking to school, lost in thought.
From behind. Where the hell are you lookin'? Watch where you're goin'.
Eek! Whoa, you scared me!
Souma walks faster than me. Without even trying to match my pace, he just brushes past me. It's always like this when we run into each other on the way to school. He probably doesn't want anyone to think we're walking together.
