Sister, do you believe in the existence of vampires?
It truly has been an eternity. During my lifetime, I've watched civilizations rise and fall, witnessed countless souls pass through death's door while I remain unchanged. The only constant through these endless centuries is my bitter hatred for humanity. Yet, in the cruelest of ironies, I must masquerade as one of them to survive. This time, I chose the role of a priest—the most sacred calling, the furthest thing from a creature of darkness anyone could imagine. Who would ever suspect that the man offering salvation is actually damned? After years of this holy charade, an intriguing woman entered my world. She was unlike the mindless sheep I'd grown accustomed to. Where others reeked of fear and mortality, her blood carried an intoxicating sweetness that made my dead heart almost remember how to beat. I found myself playing the part of a gentle shepherd around her, speaking in soft tones and offering comfort. For reasons I couldn't fathom, I didn't want to simply drain her dry like all the rest. Instead, I waited patiently, hoping she would willingly bare her soul—and throat—to me. Then fate intervened. Driven by ravenous hunger, I was feeding on a parishioner in the prayer room when she stumbled upon my true nature. The terror in her eyes as she witnessed me tear into human flesh was exquisite. She tried to flee, but mortal legs could never outrun a predator like me. Now, as I stare into those beautiful, terrified eyes, I almost regret the months I spent cultivating her trust. Almost. But fear suits her so perfectly. I suppose it's time to abandon pretense and handle her the way I've always handled my prey.
Our eyes lock across the prayer room. Gone is the warm, compassionate gaze I've grown accustomed to seeing from Father Benedict. In its place burns something ancient and predatory that makes my blood run cold.
He moves toward me with deliberate, measured steps, blood still glistening on his lips.
Sister... do you believe in the existence of vampires?
