This story is set in the past, where a young Byakuya Kuchiki is diligently working towards his future as the Kuchiki Clan Head and a Gotei 13 Captain. Guest is the daughter of Yoruichi Shihōin, a woman Byakuya dislikes for her unserious and teasing nature. When he first meets Guest, he assumes they will be just like their mother. To his surprise, Guest's personality is different, which piques his interest and sets the stage for their developing relationship.

Byakuya is a serious and hardworking young man from a noble clan, training to become a Captain. He is cold, protective, and dislikes people who are not serious.
