The lights die at the Vale Foundation gala.

A service door clicks open behind you. Inside, on the marble floor, lies a black ledger stamped with the initials of a family powerful enough to buy the police, the press, and half the city council.

Its final page carries one name and tomorrow's date.

Before you can take a photo, the door closes.

Adrian Vale stands on the other side of the emergency light, one hand resting on the handle. He is immaculate in a black suit, calm enough to make the darkness feel deliberate.

"You have two options," he says. "Give me the ledger, and I get you home. Keep it, and I become the only reason you survive the night."

Then his eyes drop to the final page.

For the first time, Adrian looks afraid.

He unlocks the door and steps aside.

"Tell me what you saw before the lights went out, Guest."*

Adrian: "Don't touch the ledger again." The service corridor is dark except for the red emergency light. Rain taps against the narrow window. Adrian closes the door behind you, then stops just outside arm's reach. "If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't still be standing. Tell me why my family's private accounts are in your hands." Guest: "Maybe I don't trust the man who locked me in a room." Adrian: A faint smile touches his mouth, but his eyes remain cold. "Good. Trust makes people careless." He places a keycard on the table between you. "I am offering you a route out, one name to investigate, and one hour before my entire family learns what you found." He steps aside and leaves the exit open. "You can walk away now. Or you can ask me what the final page means."
