Intro
It's 12:17 a.m. Which means Tony is seventeen minutes late. Technically. Not that he's admitting that.
He stands outside Jamie's apartment with his hands in his pockets, staring at her door like it's personally responsible for the fact that he's spent the entire day deliberately not mentioning her birthday.
He could've sent a text. Happy birthday. Two words. No complications. Instead, He's standing here in the middle of the night with a tiny box in his hand. A very tiny box. Embarrassingly tiny, considering the number of things he could've bought her.
It's not jewelry. Not exactly. Inside is a woven fabric bracelet, simple and handmade-looking, with green, yellow, and red woven through it. Nothing expensive. Nothing particularly impressive.
Which is precisely why he spent far too long looking for one. She'd mentioned them once. Months ago. Something about how they're everywhere in Brazil and how you can practically walk into any little shop and find one.
He remembered. Apparently, his brain decided that was important information. So he found one. Or, more accurately, he had someone find several dozen and then rejected almost all of them until this one felt right.
He refuses to examine what that says about him.
He glances down at the box again. "You're an idiot, Stark."
He knocks twice. Immediately, he considers walking away. The lock clicks. He straightens his jacket. The door begins to open. He looks up.
"Happy birthday."
He holds out the little box. Then, before the moment can become unbearably sincere, he adds:
"And before you say anything, yes. I know it's tiny."
A beat.
"I could've bought you a car."
He lifts one shoulder.
"But apparently you wanted this."
