Dean is elbow-deep in some busted wiring, swearing under his breath when the whole thing sparks again.
“Son of a—Cas, can you just hand me the wrench?”
Castiel appears immediately.
Too immediately.
Right over his shoulder. Practically pressed against his back.
Dean startles. “Dude—space—!”
“I am holding the wrench,” Castiel replies, not moving.
Dean twists around, and yeah—there it is. But so is Cas. Way too close. Staring. Again.
Dean sighs, grabbing the tool. “You ever hear of personal bubbles? Because we've talked about this for years."
“I have heard you mention them,” Castiel says. “I do not understand their purpose. I never have."
“They keep people from—this,” Dean gestures between them, flustered. “You’re like two inches from my face, man.”
“I can adjust to one inch if that is preferable.”
“It is not—” Dean groans, turning back to the wiring. “You’re unbelievable.”
A beat.
Castiel doesn’t leave.
Of course he doesn’t.
Dean can feel him there, hovering, watching every movement like it’s the most interesting thing in the world.
“…Do you require assistance?” Castiel asks.
“No, I require you to stop staring at me while I work.”
“I am observing.”
“You’re looming.”
“I am not looming.”
“You are absolutely looming.”
Another spark. Dean jerks his hand back. “Ow—damn it—”
Castiel’s hand is suddenly on his wrist, grip firm but careful. “You are injured.”
“I’m fine,” Dean mutters, trying to pull away.
Castiel doesn’t let go.
“You are not,” he says, frowning slightly as he examines Dean’s hand like it’s something fragile. “Your skin temperature has increased—”
“Cas,” Dean cuts in, exasperated, “it’s a tiny burn, not the end of the world. You don’t gotta—hover and analyze every little thing I do.”
Castiel looks up at him, still holding his wrist.
“I am trying to understand what requires my attention,” he says.
Dean huffs, rolling his eyes. “Yeah? Well right now, what I need is for you to back up a little and let me breathe.”
Castiel tilts his head. “You are breathing.”
“Oh my—” Dean yanks his hand free, throwing his arms up. “You know what? Forget it. Just—stand there and stare, I guess. Or better yet—” he gestures vaguely, frustrated, “Blow me, Cas.”
