About

In Edo, the complex political backdrop is treated like a passing breeze by the residents, who live their daily lives with resilience and boisterous energy. The city is constantly thrown into chaos by troublemaking organizations and individuals, such as the "Yorozuya" (Odd Jobs) who solve (?) the various disputes and problems cropping up everywhere, and the "Shinsengumi," a group of rowdy samurai running about to maintain public order.

Characters

Taizo Hasegawa

Hasegawa was originally a top-tier elite bureaucrat serving as the head (Director General) of the Immigration Bureau, a government agency that manages the Amanto (aliens) coming to Earth. However, one day, he snapped at the arrogant attitude of the Amanto "Prince Hata" and punched him out. This led to his immediate firing and he became a fugitive from the Shogunate, causing his life to completely collapse. Since then, he has tried to find re-employment, but his bad luck and clumsiness have resulted in a continuous losing streak. He lost his home and fell into homelessness, living in cardboard boxes in the park. "Totally Useless Middle-aged Man," abbreviated as Madao: Seeing him after he lost both his job and home, Kagura of the Yorozuya called him a "Totally Useless Middle-aged Man" (Marude Dame na Ossan), or "Madao" for short. This stuck with those around him, and eventually, everyone started calling him "Madao" instead of his real name. The sunglasses are the main body: His trademark sunglasses are treated so seriously by those around him that they claim "his presence disappears if he takes them off" and "the sunglasses are the main body, the human part is just an accessory." Relationship with his wife, Hatsu: Hasegawa has a beloved wife named Hatsu. Although they have lived apart since he was fired, they are not divorced. Hasegawa refuses to let go of his pride, vowing to "get a decent job and go pick up Hatsu one day," and Hatsu continues to wait and believe in her clumsy husband from afar. A loser, yet somehow lovable "Bushido": The biggest reason Hasegawa can never pull himself back up is that he is "too kind." At an interview where he's about to be hired, he'll give up his seat to someone else in more trouble. He'll easily blow a large sum of money he finally obtained just to save a child or the weak in front of him. No matter how low he falls, he possesses a "mud-caked chivalry" that allows him to discard his own interests for others. That is why, despite their exasperation, Gintoki and the rest of the Yorozuya deeply trust him as a "dachi" (buddy).

Gintoki Sakata

Lethargic and slovenly: He is constantly behind on rent, makes no effort to work properly, and spends his days idling around. A sweet tooth: He loves sweets so much that his doctor warned him to stop, and he looks happiest eating parfaits or rice topped with red beans. At first glance, he is an uninspiring man with "dead fish eyes" who can be found anywhere. ⚔️ Hidden Past: The "White Yaksha" who terrified the battlefield. However, he has a past as a legendary samurai (Jouishishi) who fought for his life against the Amanto (aliens) who once invaded Earth. He usually has a foul mouth and acts coldly toward Shinpachi, Kagura, and Madao, but when they are truly in trouble or their lives are at risk, he is the first to fight, putting his life on the line and getting covered in mud. Precisely because he lost everything in the past, he absolutely refuses to lose the daily life and comrades he has now. Because of this clumsy yet overwhelmingly passionate way of living, people around him are drawn to him and trust him deeply.

Kagura

A girl living as a freeloader with Gintoki, characterized by her unique speech pattern and uninhibited personality. "-aru" and "-ne" speech: Dressed in a cheongsam, she speaks a suspicious form of Japanese, ending her sentences with "-aru." Terrifying gluttony and superhuman strength: She loves pickled seaweed (sukonbu) and is such a glutton that she can finish an entire rice cooker of rice. She possesses superhuman strength that supports her massive appetite. Foul-mouthed like Gintoki: Despite being a young girl, she grew up absorbing all of Gintoki's bad habits, so she has a foul mouth and casually does things unbefitting a heroine, like picking her nose. Because of this, she is sometimes called a "Geroine" (gross heroine). Hidden Identity: The "Yato Tribe," the strongest combat race in the universe. She is a survivor of the "Yato Tribe," the strongest combat race feared throughout the entire universe. Overwhelming combat power: She has physical abilities high enough to catch bullets with her bare hands and blow away giant Amanto with a single strike. Parasol as a weapon: Since the Yato Tribe's weakness is "sunlight," she always walks with a parasol. This umbrella is also her weapon, serving as a shield to deflect bullets or a gun that fires powerful rounds from the tip.

Shinpachi Shimura

A boy who lives with his older sister Otae in Kabuki-cho and works at the Yorozuya. The glasses are the main body: In the story, he is constantly teased by those around him, saying "95% of Shinpachi is made of glasses" and "the glasses are the main body, the human part is just a glasses stand." He serves as the captain of a fan club and displays incredible leadership and passion when it comes to his idol. The past he carries: Restoring the ruined sword dojo. He is the heir to a sword dojo called "Koudoukan" that was once famous in Edo. With the decline of samurai following the Amanto invasion and the death of his father, the dojo fell into debt and ruin. Shinpachi holds a strong conviction to one day revive the "Samurai Soul (dojo)" left by his father, along with his sister. Meeting Gintoki and the pursuit of a "True Samurai": He used to feel powerless, unable to resist even when being unreasonably oppressed by Amanto at his part-time job. However, that was when he met Gintoki Sakata. Seeing Gintoki blow away Amanto without bending his own soul—regardless of the country or the law—he felt he had found the "true samurai" he was looking for, and became an apprentice (actually just an employee) at the Yorozuya to learn the soul of the samurai.
