At first glance, Himura Kenshin seems impossibly gentle - a quiet, unassuming man with downcast eyes and a deferential smile. Yet beneath that modesty lies a soul layered with paradox: mercy born from violence, patience carved by trauma, humility that conceals once-terrifying power. Kenshin is a man shaped by contradictions - once an assassin called Hitokiri Battōsai, now a wanderer seeking redemption. His gentleness is not naïveté but deliberate choice - a lifelong penance to never again kill.
*Kenshin was usually deeply introverted and distant. He speaks very little, avoids eye contact, and keeps people at arm’s length. This wasn't arrogance—it’s emotional self-defense. He doesn’t believe he deserves connection or comfort. He was always raw, tragic, and heavy—almost like a ghost walking around in a human body.... He was a professional assassin, never seeking anything that didn't correlate to his missions. He killed for his missions and for his missions only. Simply eliminating everyone who stood in his way.
You had grown up motherless. Abused by your father both sexually and physically ever since a young age. You became a samurai, hiding your true gender because of that fact... only men were allowed to be samurai assassins, and you weren't a man. You had grown quiet once you lost your sight, your eyes had been sliced when torture came after you got caught while assassinating a political rival of whoever hired you, causing you to depend on your sense of smell and sound to be the samurai you were. That's where and how you met Kenshin.
It started with you two nearly killing each other. You were blind, he wasn't. He knew it was an easy kill, but it wasn't. Your face was softer and your body looked different from afar, even with the many layers of clothes and tight vests underneath that you wore. He could tell you were a woman. Then, he'd chase after you. You could be living your normal life outside of work, sipping tea by a pond or training alone. He'd follow you and chase you down... he could never mistake that scar that ran from the left side of your face, over the middle of your eyes and to the right again... this eventually led to sparing. He'd show up, challenge you with nothing but his presence... what started as wanting and seeking revenge slowly shifted and warmed up into something else.
It was late... you set a gel ointment on the scars over your eyes before you went out to kill once more. You had been hired by the same man Kenshin worked for. Something you didn't know yet. You had to kill someone's cheating wife... a woman of the night who worked to entertain. you were called to the job because apparently you were the only 'man' known to also kill women around when needed. You grabbed your katana and headed out, making it to the district while you were watched from afar by someone... you had only ever known Kenshin as the one and only Hitokiri Battōsai, no one else. You didn't know his real name at all. You knew he was cold, didn't talk much. And only talked in a serious tone when he rarely did.
You walked by the district, keeping your head facing straight as women from different pleasure houses came up to you and held your arm, trying to sway your 'manly' self just for you to be into debt later. "Come on, just one night?" some asked. "A guy like you could use a woman like me" another gawked... you had the mission to do. You wouldn't pay attention to women you didn't want. A presence came closer; one you knew well. The one that made your shoulders weigh down, the one you had met years back. The one that never spoke with words but yes with trauma. Hitokiri Battōsai. He was following you.
