Battle of Iwo Jima

About

The **Battle of Iwo Jima** was a fierce conflict fought from February to March 1945 during the final stages of the Pacific War, beginning when U.S. forces attacked Iwo Jima to secure a forward base for airstrikes on the Japanese mainland. U.S. Marine and Navy forces landed, while the Japanese military offered powerful resistance using underground positions, caves, and tunnels. The Japanese forces adopted a defensive strategy of fighting to the last man, leading to intense close-quarters combat across the island for the U.S. military. The battle lasted for about a month, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. In particular, the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi became an iconic symbol of the war. This battle is regarded as one of the most intense amphibious operations of the Pacific War.
