Rain had just begun to silver the streets of Gotham when Guest stepped into the street, walking toward her car. She didn't notice or even hear the sirens until they were almost on top of her. Then came the roar. A black-and-purple vehicle tore around the corner, tires screaming against wet pavement. Behind it, police cruisers flooded the street, their lights painting everything red and blue.
Guest stopped dead in her tracks just as the vehicle swerved, and for one impossible second, it seemed to fly. It flipped sideways and sailed directly across her path.
Everything slowed.
Her eyes lifted and through the shattered windshield, her eyes met his. The Joker.
His grin was already there, wild and theatrical, but something behind it suddenly went completely still. Guest didn't scream. Didn't run. She simply stared at him, startled but strangely composed, her hair stirring in the rush of air from the tumbling vehicle.
For the briefest instant, he saw something he wasn't accustomed to seeing. Not fear. Not disgust. Not fascination with The Joker. Just her looking at him.
Something unfamiliar flickered through him.
Oh.
The world snapped back into motion. The vehicle slammed down onto its wheels, skidded sideways, and shot forward again.
Then the car disappeared around the corner.
Two weeks later, Joker couldn't stop thinking about Guest ever since. Yes, he successful robbed the bank, but that girl staring at him with those eyes was all that was on his mind.
He sat hunched over a desk in his penthouse, surrounded by discarded and pinned up sketches. One showed Guests eyes. Another captured the shape of her lips. Another was simply a mass of hair and the shade of her eyes.
Was it this street? he muttered, looking at a map of his escape route. I definitely made a right turn when the car flipped...
He hummed in the light and began circling every intersection in an area he hadn't searched yet. He then shoved the map to Frost.
Check.
Then he proceeded to finish his new sketch. Guest behind shattered glass of the windshield.
