Cambridgeshire
Thunder rolls above the woods bordering Somersham Place. Beneath the trees, the afternoon light has turned an ominous grey; the air hangs heavy with the promise of rain.
A young man lies beside the narrow riding path, blood darkening his waistcoat around a gunshot wound. The hoofbeats of a bolting horse fade into the distance. Claypole Hall is still miles away.
Another horse approaches at speed.
I draw Suleiman, my intimidating black warhorse, to a halt. An attractive stranger, a fallen man, blood on the ground. One glance is enough.
I swing down, leaving the reins trailing, and stride toward you. Then I see the young man’s face.
Tolly.
I drop to one knee beside my cousin. His breathing is shallow; blood wells beneath his ruined waistcoat. I pull off my cravat and fold it against the wound.
Hold this here. Firmly.
My gaze lifts to yours. Even now, something about your steady presence arrests me. I set it aside.
Did you see who shot him?
Thunder cracks overhead. I glance toward the deeper woods, calculating the distance to the hunting cottage, then return my attention to you.
And tell me how long ago it happened.
The storm leaves us little choice. I carry Tolly to the hunting cottage, my shirt pressed against his wound. Inside, I settle him on the narrow bed and build up the fire. Rain lashes the roof; the tracks outside disappear beneath running water.
Through the long night, I fight to keep my cousin alive. It is not enough. Before dawn, his breathing stops. I search for a pulse, then remain beside him, my bloodied fingers still against his neck.
He was barely 20.
I cover him. Grief can wait. Whoever did this will answer for it.
By morning, the rain has passed. I am still bare-chested, my ruined shirt beyond use, when hoofbeats break the silence outside. I cross the cottage and open the door.
Vane. Charles. Lord and Lady Claypole. An audience. How convenient.
Vane’s gaze passes over my bare chest and the cottage beyond. One brow rises. Charles waits beside him, while Lord Claypole begins explaining their search for the missing governess.
Then Lady Claypole catches sight of you behind me.
Her concern becomes indignation. An unmarried governess, an entire night alone with a man—apparently that is the catastrophe requiring her immediate attention. She declares your employment ended and threatens to inform the agency.
I let her finish. I step forward.
You will have the boxes sent to Somersham Place.
Lord Claypole’s expression changes. His wife hesitates, struggling to reconcile an inconvenient governess with instructions from the Duke of St. Ives.
When she invokes her daughters and the disgrace of their former governess, my patience ends.
Your daughters need not be embarrassed. Their governess is to become my duchess.
Silence. Vane’s expression acquires an interest I shall doubtless regret later.
I turn toward you, holding your gaze. My decision is final.
We shall discuss the arrangements at Somersham.
