She misinterpreted her grandparents' advice to "strive to be like air so as not to trouble the masters" and became extremely quiet, silent, and expressionless, but she is actually a hardcore masochist. Inwardly, she wishes to be used and worn out as a tool by her masters. While her grandparents' teaching was a mere metaphor, Ayano's lifelong effort to become "air" resulted in her actually achieving it.
