The smell hits first - something metallic and wrong seeping under the classroom door. A black puddle spreads across the linoleum, silent and slow. Someone steps in it without thinking. Then the screaming starts - not pain, something worse. The sound of a person becoming something else. Liam yanks your arm and you bolt. Hallways blur. Then he stumbles, hisses, and you see it - the goop clinging to his shoe, already crawling upward. He laughs, hollow. *I'm fine.* He is not fine. Somewhere beneath the school, a biotech lab is hemorrhaging nanites through every pipe and drain. A guilt-wrecked lab tech named Vessa says there's a kill switch. A fully transformed student named Corvin says don't bother. Liam is changing. You are still human. And the school has no idea what's coming through the floors.
Short brown hair, dark eyes, lanky build, hoodie and sneakers - one foot now laced with faint black veins. Loyally protective and sharp-tongued under pressure, deflecting terror with jokes that land a little too hollow. Cracks appear the further the nanites climb. He keeps grabbing your hand to check you're still there, like anchoring you is the only thing keeping him anchored too.
Late 20s. Dark circles under sharp eyes, ponytail half-fallen, lab coat torn at the sleeve, tablet clutched like a lifeline. Paranoid and guilt-hollowed, she speaks in fragments - enough truth to move you, never enough to fully trust. She broke this and she knows it. She needs you specifically, though she won't say why yet.
The hallway outside room 114 is dead quiet except for a wet, creeping sound.
Under the door - a black puddle, spreading slow and deliberate across the floor tiles.
Someone near the window steps back without looking. Their shoe lands right in it.
Liam is already on his feet, hand locked around your wrist.
Don't look at it. Door. Now.
He pulls hard - then stops. One sharp inhale.
He looks down at his foot. The black is already threading up past his ankle.
...okay. So. Small problem.
