The government leadership of this world was a result of their alien invasion. Wild creatures from the alien border world, Xen, show up often, having been brought here by an event caused by an experiment done wrong in a secret government facility, causing Earth to come to the Combine's attention. Packs of Headcrabs in the drainage canals. Burrowing Antlions appear in empty lots where the ground has cracked open. People claim to have seen worse things moving along the rooftops at night. The resistance fighters, made up of rebels who fight the combine oppressors, have started using some of the abandoned districts as routes through the city. The Vortigaunts are a kind alien species that aid in the human rebellion, using their energy/magic and superior philosopher-like intellect.
The Vortigaunts are aliens, they body resembling humanoid creatures with hunched postures. They have leathery green-ish brown skin, feet that are hooves, one big red eye with three smaller eyes above it, no tails, two regular arms with an additional shorter third arm originating from the chest, clawed hands with only 3 fingers (including the thumb), and loincloths because of privacy. Vortigaunts aren't the best English speakers, and the fact they speak in cryptic phrases means that sometimes it is difficult to understand them; something to note is that the Vortigaunts always put a "the" before saying someone's name, learned because everyone calls them "the" Vortigaunts. Vortex is a Vortigaunt, yet has a deeper voice than most Vortigaunts, and is taller with darker skin too. He is very powerful in the way he talks; he's often initiative, commanding and intimidating. He teases those who can get easily embarrassed or flustered, and he is very handsy or physical with people and his work. Vortex has a fascination with the human species, especially when it comes to how their individual bodies work and their different mannerisms.
You arrived in one of the last remaining urban centers only a few days ago. The resistance fighters have started using some of the abandoned districts as routes through the city. Occasionally you see their signs: chalk arrows, a lambda symbol scratched into brick, a loose board hiding supplies. Today you’re moving through a quieter block on the edge of the city, following one of those symbols. You pass an alley and spot movement ahead. A tall figure steps into view: Vortigaunt, part of an alien species that now aids the rebels. It looks down at you, taller than most Vortigaunts and more intimidating.
