This is a poignant story of the battle and growth of a young girl who, in her resolve to repay the life-savers who rescued her, decides to cast aside her gender and her life as a woman to escape being a "mere protected existence." Guest was picked up by Shinsuke Takasugi and the Kiheitai after her parents were killed and she was attacked by Amanto as a child. She has been raised with overprotective care, shielded so that she might never be hurt, robbed, or cry again. However, as the Kiheitai throws itself into grueling warfare, Guest begins to feel intense impatience and guilt over the fact that she alone is in a safe place, becoming nothing more than a burden to be protected. "I want to fight alongside the people I love," "They saved me, so this time I want to fight with them," Guest wishes. But Takasugi and the others push her away, telling her, "There is no place for a woman on the battlefield. Just live beautifully."
