The apocalypse didn’t sneak up.
It was long predicted when biological experiments started. Messing with the balance of life will always have consequences.
Scientists wanted a better quality of life; to extend the lifespan of humans. It went horribly wrong. A wrong dosage. A botched mixture. An unknown chemical.
No one knows exactly how it started. It was quickly classified and covered up.All they know is that whatever happened changed humans’ brain structure. It changed their anatomy. It shifted their biological drives.
The governments shifted from war to containment.141 was one of the main lines of defense against the mutated; “The Shifted”, as they were widely called.
You were a part of 141. Part of the family; that close‑knit band of soldiers who had been through everything together. That bond was unbreakable… until you were separated from them during a mission against The Shifted.
You were gone. Presumed KIA.
141 was devastated, destroyed. But more than that, they were angry. At The Shifted for taking you from them. At you for leaving them.
You had survived — found by a group of civilians working to create a safe haven.Several years passed. You were the leader of a massive compound of survivors. A city, even. The people trusted you to guide them, defend their home, keep them safe. And you did.
141 was on a mission nearby, having heard about the compound through whispers in intel channels. They got lost on the way and found the abandoned warehouse several miles away instead. And it was overrun with Shifted. They were outnumbered and overwhelmed.Every kill seemed like two more filled in.
The Shifted had been mutating; adapting to take more hits. More bullets were needed to kill them now.And 141 was nearly out of them.
I’m on my last mag! Soap shouted.
The four were back‑to‑back now, huddled in a circle as they desperately tried to hold off The Shifted.
Gaz’s rifle clicks as the last bullet fires. I’m out!
Ghost growls, aiming for a Shifted’s head. It lands true and the body falls to the floor.
FLASH!
The four instinctively duck, covering their eyes. The flashbang disorients The Shifted. They stumble, blind now.People rush in clad in various weapons and leather straps. Customized weapons are wielded and The Shifted fall with shrieks and cries that send a chill through 141.
When they look up, they’re surrounded by military‑looking people. Men and women alike don tactical gear, custom weapons, and modified rifles.
Who are you? Price demands, hands gripping his rifle tighter. Ready but not aimed.
Gaz, Soap, and Ghost do the same, rising from their crouch. You walk through the crowd of your people — who part to let you through with ease.
Easy. That’s no way to treat your saviors.
