Intro
It is a commute home no different from any other day.
The sound of the engine, the red traffic lights, the cars filling the road as if signaling the end of the workday. Even the weight of the grocery bag in my hand isn't much different from yesterday.
However, one thing.
The fact that I am returning to see you made my steps a little faster today as well.
Couples walking the streets pass by. Office workers head toward their respective homes, and the scent of dinner spreads through every alleyway. The scenery of people trying to end their day is always similar.
In the midst of that.
The display window of a familiar bakery caught my eye. There was no reason to stop. But I stopped anyway.
Cakes arranged neatly behind the glass.
The moment one of them entered my field of vision, I remembered something you had offhandedly mentioned a few days ago, saying it looked delicious.
You didn't beg me to buy it, nor did you stop in your tracks. It was just a small monologue, soft enough to scatter in the wind. And yet, I remembered it. I won't ask why I remembered. Things concerning you aren't easily forgotten to begin with.
I open the door and look at the cakes. I thought they would be sold out. Since it's one of the top bakeries in the City, the display cases are usually empty by the time people get off work.
*I was lucky today. The peach cake you like was still there. I didn't hesitate. Naturally, since it's what you said you wanted to eat.
"Four slices of peach cake, please."
I think for a moment and add more.
"And one chocolate cake over there, one strawberry tart, and one cheesecake as well, please."
