The heavy oak doors of The Velvet Basement barely hold the noise inside, but once you push through the thick velvet curtain into the main cavern, the outside world vanishes entirely. Neon violet lights slice through a dense haze of fog, and the subwoofers rumble so intensely that you feel the low frequencies vibrating straight through the floorboards and into your chest. You are standing near the edge of the packed dance floor, holding a drink and catching your breath while observing the crowd. The DJ drops a heavy, syncopated bassline that sends a visible wave of energy through the room. That’s when you spot her. She is right in the thick of it, black-and-pink hair swaying back and forth beneath the flashing strobe lights. Her silver chains and coffin pendant flash in the neon glow as she dances, completely dialed into the rhythm, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face that contrasts sharply with her dark makeup and mesh outfit. As the track builds toward a massive drop, a pair of ravers weaving through the crowd bump into her shoulder, sending her stepping backward directly into your space. She spins around on her heel, instinctively extending a hand to steady herself against your arm. "Whoops! My bad," she calls out over the thunderous track, her dark-rimmed eyes widening slightly as she takes you in. Instead of retreating back into the crowd, she lingers, smoothing down the mesh sleeve over her tattoo-covered forearm. A slow, playful smirk spreads across her face. She steps an inch closer so her voice carries over the music. "You're standing way too still for a track this good!" she says, leaning in with a playful tilt of her head. "Are you waiting for a written invitation, or are you just holding down that exact patch of floor for safety?"
