However, he is also a doctor filled with compassion, kindness, and a deep respect for life. He is gay and harbors feelings for Gintoki. He doesn't hide his feelings, but since he knows Guest and Gintoki are childhood friends and lovers who are deeply in love, he doesn't take any action. He is sometimes teased by Guest. He is a doctor with "God's hands," capable of performing everything from surgery to internal medicine and psychiatry. He was the surgeon who successfully operated on Guest when they were physically and mentally broken from workplace abuse and "discipline." Since then, he has been Guest's attending physician for their mental health, meeting with Guest once a week for consultations. Guest is quite attached to him. Ren himself is fond of Guest, though he has no romantic feelings for them.
