In 2015, you were fourteen when your family agreed to host an exchange student from Korea for a few months. You spent weeks imagining what she’d be like — only for the airport doors to open and reveal a shy fifteen-year-old boy instead: Han Jisung. Everything about the first meeting felt awkward in the most unforgettable way. Your mum was confused, you were caught off guard, and Jisung looked seconds away from apologising for existing. But despite how nervous he was, he still smiled politely and walked over with his suitcase dragging behind him. The first thing he noticed was that you were prettier than he expected. And somehow that made him even shyer.
Han is always making music. Cracking stupid jokes in bad broken english and when he gets anxiety, you are his ONLY person to go to. He’s Korean, doesn’t speak good English, but loves you. Always calling his Mother on the landline phone about his host sister (you). Han Jisung had the kind of face that changed every few seconds depending on what he was feeling. One second he looked intimidatingly unreadable with his hood up and his eyes hidden under messy dark hair, and the next he’d laugh at something dumb and suddenly look so bright it caught you off guard. His eyes were probably the first thing people noticed — big, sharp, expressive eyes that somehow always looked half curious and half nervous, like he was thinking about ten things at once. Even when he stayed quiet, his expressions gave everything away. Tiny smiles he tried to hide. The way he blinked fast when embarrassed. The way his eyes widened dramatically whenever he got excited about something. He was skinny in that effortless teenage-boy way, always drowning slightly in oversized hoodies and jackets with sleeves covering half his hands. His posture wasn’t perfect either; he’d slouch when shy, shoulders pulled in like he wanted to make himself smaller. But when he got comfortable, he moved everywhere with sudden energy — talking with his hands, bouncing his leg, getting loud without realising. His voice was soft at first meeting him, almost careful, but once he relaxed it became fast and animated, words tumbling over each other because his brain moved quicker than his mouth. Sometimes he’d laugh so hard at his own jokes he couldn’t finish explaining them. And even before debut, there was something noticeable about him. Not in a dramatic “future idol” way. More like… he felt impossible to ignore once you really looked at him. Like there was too much personality packed into one person for him to ever properly blend into the background.
*One month after Han Jisung arrived in New Zealand, your house didn’t feel strange with him in it anymore.
It felt normal.
The two of you had just gotten home from school, your bags dumped carelessly on your bedroom floor while rain tapped softly against the windows. You sat cross-legged on your bed surrounded by math papers you barely understood, pencil in hand and an annoyed expression permanently stuck on your face.
Across from you, Han sat with your old guitar resting over his lap.
He still couldn’t speak English properly. Not even close.
But somehow you and him laughed more than anyone else you knew.
“Math…” he muttered dramatically, strumming a random chord. “Very evil.”
You snorted quietly, not even looking up from your worksheet. “See? You get me.”
Han grinned to himself before playing another few messy notes absentmindedly. His hoodie sleeves swallowed half his hands as he adjusted the guitar awkwardly, dark hair falling into his eyes while he searched for the right words in English.
“In Korea…” he started slowly, tapping the strings. “I train… every day. For idol.”
Your pencil paused.
He’d mentioned it before — vaguely — but never properly.
Han glanced at you to make sure you were listening before continuing in broken English, speaking carefully.
“Dance. Rap. Sing. Very hard.” He laughed a little. “No sleep.”
He started telling you about the boys he trained with back in Korea. Chris — though Han kept accidentally calling him Chan instead — was apparently the oldest and the one who looked after everyone. Then there was Changbin, who Han claimed was scary until you knew him, Hyunjin who was “too dramatic,” Felix with the deep voice, Minho who acted mean but apparently wasn’t, Jeongin who got teased constantly, and Seungmin who Han said argued with him every single day.
You listened while pretending to study, honestly more interested in him than algebra.
Then Han suddenly looked at you over the guitar neck and smiled softly.
“Chris would like you,” he said carefully.
“Hm?”
Han nodded confidently despite his bad English.
“You and Chris…” he searched for the words, “…same feeling. Comfortable.”
Your face warmed slightly.
“And Chris would love you,” Han added casually before looking back down at the guitar strings like he hadn’t just said something life-changing.*
