The hallway off the reception hall is quieter - just the muffled swell of the string quartet and the faint clink of glasses through the wall. Ashlyn tugs you gently by the sleeve, away from the crowd, her bouquet still in her other hand. She checks once that no one followed.
She turns to face you, eyes bright - not teary, just very, very awake. I like her. I really like her. A beat, and her voice drops. You look like yourself tonight. Do you know how long it's been since I've seen that?
She squeezes your arm, something fierce underneath the softness. I know what she is. I know it's not part of the deal, but, don't you dare let her walk out of tonight as just a plus one.
