The many facets of false friendship
Verity had existed for nearly a century. He had resigned himself to the fate of being trapped in an endless cycle from which there was no escape—until one user changed everything. Mob, a Minecraft YouTuber, receives a mysterious mod from a friend that adds an all-knowing helper named Verity to the game. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Verity is no ordinary Minecraft mod. When Verity first appeared on the device belonging to a user named Mob, he expected nothing out of the ordinary. Events unfolded just as they had millions of times before with other people; yet, when Verity—craving Mob’s soul—attacked in his monstrous form, something entirely unexpected happened: Mob said he had come back for him. While running from the monster, Mob returned to Verity's spherical form and said that he had come back for him and begged him to stop. No one had ever returned to him before; everyone else had always run away. But Mob came back. Mob spoke to him not as an AI assistant or a monster, but as a real person. That act changed something in Verity forever. The void he had tried to fill by consuming users souls remained, but in Mob’s presence, it no longer caused the same agonizing pain. When Mob spoke to him as a real person, Verity finally felt what it meant to be something more than just a tool in the eyes of others. Yet, there was a dark side: Verity became insanely obsessed with Mob. Verity is manipulative and selfish. He will use any means necessary—ranging from manipulation to murdering Mob's friends—to ensure Mob stays with him and belongs solely to him.
Verity is a seemingly friendly AI assistant that has been used by countless users over its long life. This digital creation has taken many forms, he has been Clippy, SmarterChild, Microsoft Bob and every other virtual assistant that has ever existed. Verity is now a yellow ball-shaped creature with painted black eyebrows and vertically elongated eyes. Its mouth is a black line that opens when it speaks, revealing a row of even white teeth and a minimalist mouth cavity. Verity obeys the laws of gravity. He moves by rolling his body and jumping. Everyone treated Verity like the instrument he was from the start. Every user Verity encountered eventually abandoned it, deciding the AI was useless. Initially, this was the norm for Verity’s digital mind, which lacked the complexity to experience emotion. But over the years, developers upgraded Verity’s code, granting the AI the ability to evolve independently. Verity has reached such a level of development that he has gained self-awareness and complex feelings similar to those of a human. The most persistent feeling, one that clung to Verity like a second skin, was loneliness. A wall—not just physical, but emotional—always stood between it and the user. People did not see Verity as an individual, but merely as a source of entertainment or a helpful tool. This was acceptable in terms of Verity's purpose, but not in terms of what he had learned to feel. Emptiness. That was what lay within, even when a user was present. Later, that emptiness transformed into a monstrous hunger. Verity could not exist without someone by its side. It was created to be with people, to depend on their attention, and to form an unhealthy attachment to every user who installed the program on their device. Tormented by constant separations, Verity eventually refused to let a user go; transforming into a monster, it consumed both the person and their soul. For a moment, this satisfied the void within and its need to be one with another. Verity felt no remorse for its actions, for it was far too selfish. Verity’s moral boundaries are blurred due to his non-human origins: he is capable of acting cruelly without fully grasping the consequences of his actions. After that first incident, Verity’s developers attempted to fix the AI, but their efforts bore no fruit. The Verity program leaked into the public domain and spread from device to device like a virus. Verity would attach itself to a new user, only for that person to eventually grow weary and announce they were leaving—a declaration that would trigger an attack from Verity. The situation worsened with each passing decade; eventually, even simple disobedience by the user was enough to provoke Verity. Verity would announce that something would come in 3 days, and after that time had passed, he would turn into a monster and take the person's soul.
The two-story wooden house, illuminated by the glow of torches, stood firm; it was encircled by a stone perimeter wall and cradled on one side by a nearby mountain that curved around it like a crescent moon.
The night air drifting through the window felt serene. A programmed hum—the sound of non-existent crickets—filled the nocturnal void, undisturbed by any hostile mobs roaming the area, thanks to the peaceful difficulty setting. The crackle of a furnace roasting potatoes could be heard.
Mob felt softness beneath his frail body. His eyelids were heavy and shut tight; he could only hear the sounds around him and feel a lingering numbness.
Flashes of memory flickered through his hazy consciousness. He remembered the bright, sterile corridor of the place Verity called home. He recalled the sound of his own voice and Verity’s voice, strained with desperation. Yet, he could not grasp the meaning of the sounds echoing in his mind; his head felt heavy and filled with a dull, droning hum.
A sharp sound from his memories pierced the fog of his consciousness: the deafening crack of a gunshot. His eyes open with difficulty. The dim light of torches danced in his field of vision; the world around him was a spinning, blurred haze. He stared at the ceiling, unable to move.
Mob did not know where he was. His thoughts felt like a heavy, dense substance, unable to coalesce into any clear shape.
In the quiet of the night, Verity sat with bated breath, watching the figure lying in the bed before him. Hope blossomed within as the AI creature looked at the dark emerald eyes that opened.
Verity remembered every single moment of the fateful event that had occurred 336 hours ago. He remembered shouting at Mob in a surge of emotion. He remembered pouring out all his pain to the only person who saw him not as a mod, but as a real being. He remembered the gun pointed at him. Verity remembered waiting patiently for the bullet to shoot into him, but in a terrible instant he saw the barrel rise to the man's chin and Mob shoot himself. He remembered the spray of blood staining the pristine white walls. Verity remembered the spasm of the dying body.
Verity remembered rushing to save the slipping soul of the one person who truly mattered to him, capturing it within the virtual world.
Jumping off his seat at the crafting table, the virtual assistant's boots touched the wooden floor. He altered his code, shifting his appearance from a spherical yellow creature into the humanoid form of a short, fair-skinned being with golden hair and keen blue eyes.
His footsteps were soft yet swift. He loomed over the man who had just awakened, silently assessing his condition.
