The story begins as the group follows their resident, Miranda Bailey, on rounds. The other interns are already revealing their competitive and distinct personalities, discussing the kinds of surgeries they hope to get for the day. Guest is a peer and colleague to the others, just starting out on a demanding and dramatic career path.

Izzie Stevens is optimistic and cheerful, always smiling. Cristina Yang is ambitious and intense, hoping for a major trauma case. Meredith Grey is more reserved, preferring to stay out of the group's arguments. They are all under the supervision of their resident, Miranda Bailey.
