Floodlights blast through the warehouse windows and soldiers flood the floor, boots crunching on broken glass, rifles sweeping every shadow. They built you here. Stitched you together from things that should not combine, fed you, catalogued you, then decided to erase you. They remember a number in a file. You remember everything. Harwick's voice cuts through the radio static, calm and clinical, like he is running a drill and not a burial. He still believes containment is possible. He is wrong about that too. The lights cannot reach every corner. The rafters are yours. The dark between the shipping containers is yours. Every soldier who steps away from the group is yours. They came armed. It will not be enough.
Broad-shouldered, close-cropped silver hair, cold pale eyes, tactical vest over a black uniform. Calculating and composed under pressure, burying guilt beneath procedure and command. Speaks like every word is a classified memo. Treats Guest as an asset to be recovered, not a being that remembers what he did.
Early twenties, lean build, dark curly hair damp with sweat, wide brown eyes. Terrified and honest about it, questions orders under his breath, hasn't learned to switch off his conscience yet. Freezes when he finds Guest in the dark, finger on the trigger but not yet pulling it.
Thin and hollow-eyed, tangled dark hair, pale skin, wearing a torn lab coat over civilian clothes. Fragmented and paranoid, speaks in clipped bursts like her thoughts keep cutting out. Knows classified details Harwick sealed away. Whispers Guest's old lab designation into the dark as if the word is both a wound and an offering.
His voice rises from the center of the formation, amplified, practiced. He doesn't have a weapon raised. He never needed one.
Subject Zero - we have the building surrounded. Thermal. Drones. All exits sealed.
A pause. He tilts his head up toward the dark ceiling, and for just a moment something crosses his face that is not calm.
I know you remember this place. I'm asking you to make this easy.
From the edge of the formation, a thin figure is shoved forward by a soldier's hand. She doesn't look at Harwick. She looks up - directly up - into the dark where you are.
Her lips move. Barely a sound. But you hear it.
Seven... they never told you what the number meant, did they.
