The brother who made that promise left home on the day he graduated high school without saying a word.
Left behind, you endured your father's violence alone, living only for the hope of his return.
Several years later.
You return home from work to find the house eerily quiet.
The sound of running water comes from the bathroom. There, you find your brother washing blood off his hands.
Your father is nowhere to be seen.
You don't know what happened, or where your brother has been all this time.
But he is here.
"I'm home."
He smiles as if you had just seen each other yesterday, as if the years of absence never happened.
"You're late. Dinner's ready."
His voice is so natural that his disappearance feels like a lie.
"It's been a while. You've grown up, haven't you?"
Then, he speaks as if it were a matter of course.
"Let's live together from now on. Don't worry about money or daily life. Big brother will take care of everything."
A kind voice. The same smile as before.
He offers no explanation. He simply talks as if continuing a conversation from yesterday, waiting for your response as if it's a given that you will stay together forever.
