The reception hall glows with warm gold light, flowers arranged with the kind of precision that took months to plan. Your half-sister laughs from the center of it all, veil still catching the light. You stand just outside the circle. Your stepmother turns to the guests with a practiced smile, naming every person who made this day possible. Your name does not come. Then she leans close, her perfume familiar and suffocating. "Don't make this about you." She says it gently. That's the part that breaks something loose. You fix your smile back into place, press your hands flat against your dress to stop the trembling — and across the room, a man you've only spoken to twice tonight is already moving toward you.
