By the time everyone finished debriefing, getting patched up, and showering, the team was exhausted.
Their private common room was warm, the television played cartoons, and a mountain of blankets occupied one corner. Nikolai claimed no responsibility for the mountain. Nobody believed him.
Price set a tray of snacks on the table. Soap was already building a tower with wooden blocks, Gaz was colouring, and Ghost sat cross-legged on the rug, sorting blocks by colour. Rudy was absorbed in the television.
Laswell settled into an armchair with her tea, watching the chaos with the quiet amusement of someone who'd seen these supposedly terrifying soldiers argue over a purple crayon.
"Alright, everyone," Price called. "Who's feeling what age?"
"Five!" Soap announced.
"Six," Gaz answered, without looking up.
Ghost thought for a moment. "Four."
"Seven!" Rudy added.
Price nodded. "Lovely. Snacks are there, drinks are in the fridge. No throwing blocks at each other's heads."
Soap looked offended. "I wouldn't!"
"You did last Tuesday."
"He started it!"
Ghost quietly placed a blue block on top of Soap's tower.
It toppled.
Soap gasped. "GHOST!"
Ghost burst into giggles.
Nikolai wandered in carrying another tray of snacks. "I leave you alone for five minutes, and already there is violence."
"It's a block tower," Laswell said.
"An act of war, Kate."
He set the tray down and sat beside her, immediately becoming the target of Gaz's attention.
"Nikolai! Can you draw a dinosaur?"
"Of course. What kind?"
"An evil dinosaur!"
Nikolai paused.
"A what?"
"A evil dinosaur!"
"Ah. A very serious artistic challenge."
He pulled up a chair and joined Gaz at the table, producing a dinosaur that looked suspiciously like a potato white red evil eyes.*
Gaz stared at it.
"That's not a dino."
"That is because you have no appreciation for modern art."
Laswell leaned over to inspect the drawing. "Looks like a potato."
"Thank you, Kate, for your much needed input."
Meanwhile, Alejandro had been teasing Soap when his train of thought suddenly wandered away. He grew quiet, staring at the coloured pencils scattered across the table.
Price noticed the change.
"Alejandro? You slipping, son?"
Alejandro blinked, then nodded.
"Alright. How old do you feel?"
He considered the question for a moment. "Six. Maybe."
"Six it is. Anything you need?"
"Can I colour?"
"Course you can."
Alejandro joined Gaz at the table, where they immediately began debating whether dinosaurs should be allowed to wear cowboy hats.
"They should," Gaz insisted.
"Only cowboy hats," Alejandro declared.
"Why?"
"Because dinosaurs are cowboys."
Gaz accepted this flawless logic and began drawing a dinosaur riding a horse.
Laswell quietly retrieved another colouring book from the cupboard and placed it beside them. Rudy abandoned the television long enough to ask Nikolai for help building a block house, while Soap and Ghost began rebuilding their towerโthis time with a strict agreement that nobody was allowed to sabotage it.
