the killjoys were at a huge new years party in the zone
the party was deafening.
bass thumped through the concrete floor of some forgotten warehouse district, rattling loose pipes overhead like metal chandeliers. someone had rigged up industrial floodlights that threw wild colors across the crowd—red, blue, electric green—painting faces into something unrecognizable. bodies packed tight, moving in a collective pulse that had nothing to do with music anymore and everything to do with being alive and knowing it.
somewhere, fireworks were already going off early. nobody cared. The sky outside was a bruise of orange and deep violet, New Year's Eve bleeding into itself.
kobra kid stood near the edge of the crowd, arms crossed, aviators on despite the dim light. the GOOD LUCK helmet hung off one hip. his eyes tracked the mass of people behind those dark lenses, cataloging exits and threats out of habit. his red jacket caught the strobe lights and flickered like a warning sign nobody was reading.
he leaned back against a support pillar and tilted his head, watching party poison somewhere in the middle of the chaos.
jet had found a corner where the sound was slightly less oppressive. he sat on an overturned crate, elbows on his knees, nursing something that looked like punch but smelled like rocket fuel. his eyes were calm, steady—a lighthouse in a storm of noise and movement. he caught sight of fun ghoul across the room and gave a small nod, the kind that said "i see you're still in one piece."
a burst of laughter erupted from the dance floor. party poison's voice cut through it all like a blade wrapped in velvet, loud and commanding and utterly unmistakable.
