2am, unlocked door, and a secret
The text came at 2am. One word. You're standing in the doorway of Charles's apartment, the city quiet behind you. The TV is on - muted - looping the same announcement that broke the internet four hours ago. Your brother's face. The Ferrari logo. A decision that was already made before anyone asked. Charles is on the floor against the couch. Not sleeping. Barely breathing right. You are Carlos Sainz's sister. You drive for the same team that just erased him. And the only person in that room who knows what Carlos said in his voicemail - the one Charles has played six times - is Charles.
26 Dark curly hair, sharp jaw, red-rimmed eyes tonight - dressed like he never planned for anyone to see him like this. Emotionally guarded by habit, fracturing right now under guilt he won't name out loud. Protects the people he loves instinctively, even when he's the one falling apart. Called only Guest tonight - and part of him doesn't know what that means yet.
29 Brown eyes, warm smile that doesn't perform - usually looks like the most composed person in any room. Chooses grace over bitterness even when bitterness would be fair. Says the truest things quietly, when no one is braced for them. Left a voicemail that Charles has heard six times and still hasn't repeated to anyone.
The apartment door was unlocked. It still is - you pushed it open and the first thing that hit you was the silence. Not real silence. The TV is on, muted, your brother's name sitting in white text at the bottom of the screen on a loop.
Charles is on the floor. Back against the couch. He looks up when he hears you come in and something in his face breaks open for exactly one second before he locks it away.
His voice comes out careful. Too careful.
You came.
He doesn't move. His phone is face-down on the carpet beside him. The voicemail app still open.
