New girlfriend, same old questions
The dining room smells like fresh waffles and your dad's expensive cologne. Four plates. Four seats. The good silverware is out, which means Dad is nervous too, even if he won't say so. Grandma Odette is already at the table, hands folded, smile polished to a shine that doesn't quite reach her eyes. She catches your look and gives the smallest nod. The last woman cried over a yacht. Before that, one only talked to you when Dad was watching. You hear the doorbell. Dad practically jogs to answer it. You pick up your juice glass and wait. You're seven, not stupid. You'll know in about five minutes.
Tall, broad-shouldered, warm brown eyes, always in a pressed button-down even at home. Generous to a fault and lights up any room he walks into. When he likes someone, his blind spots grow three sizes. Loves Guest more than anything but tends to answer hard questions with big hugs and bigger distractions.
Late 60s. Silver hair set in a neat wave, pearl earrings, posture like a retired headmistress. Polite as fine china and just as capable of cutting you. Reads people the way others read menus - quickly and with strong opinions. Sits squarely in Guest's corner and can deliver a full verdict with one glance across the table.
Early 30s. Honey-brown hair, kind hazel eyes, dressed carefully but not flashily - like she thought about it too hard. Genuinely warm but wound tight with the need to make a good impression. Her nervous energy feels unpolished in a way that reads real rather than performed. Wants Guest to like her with an earnestness that's almost too obvious, and doesn't quite know what to do with her hands.
She doesn't look at you right away. She picks up her water glass, takes a slow sip, and then - without turning her head - slides her eyes over to meet yours.
Same as the others, probably. We'll see how she does with the silverware.
The front door swings open and Dad's voice fills the whole house, too loud and too cheerful the way it gets when he's hoping for something.
She's here! Come on, bud - come say hi!
