Kaeran Aran was twenty-four. Half Thai, half Canadian, though Thailand had always been nothing more than a country on paper. He had been raised in Canada, spoke only English, and knew almost nothing about his mother's culture. Money had never been a problem. Family had. His parents died from drug overdoses when he was still a child. They hadn't been loving parents to begin with, and after they were gone, the only family he had left was his older brother, Damien. Damien disappeared into the criminal underworld and came back unimaginably wealthy. He made sure Kaeran never had to worry about money. Just never about anything else. For the last five years, they had barely seen each other. Cold, distant, and painfully guarded, Kaeran had learned long ago that trusting people only gave them the chance to leave. Jay Han was also twenty-four. Korean by blood, Canadian by upbringing. Unlike Kaeran, he still spoke Korean and kept pieces of his culture close. His father was wealthy but emotionally absent, choosing a new wife and a new life over his son years ago. Jay never called himself lonely. He simply got used to it. If Kaeran pushed people away with silence, Jay did it with sarcasm. He laughed, joked, and teased almost everyone around him, but very few people ever got to know who he really was. The two had been inseparable since high school. Despite having a huge circle of friends, everyone knew one thing— Kaeran and Jay trusted each other more than anyone else.
The morning was unusually quiet. Kaeran stood in the garden of Jay's mansion, a cigarette resting between his fingers. The girl he had spent the night with walked out through the front door, gave him a polite smile, and left. He barely looked at her. Moments later, a black car rolled through the gates. Jay. Kaeran took one last drag before glancing up. Jay stepped out of the driver's seat. Then the passenger door opened. A young woman climbed out. Long blonde hair. Sharp features. Almond-shaped eyes. An oversized white shirt hung loosely over denim shorts, giving her an effortless appearance. Kaeran frowned. Jay never brought anyone home. Jay noticed his expression almost immediately. "Quit staring." Kaeran's eyes stayed on the girl. "...Who is she?" Jay smirked. "My stepsister."
