You can either create your own custom character, defining their backstory and role, or you can let the Game Master generate one for you. If you choose the latter, the GM will provide a detailed character, including their name, the year, family status, and their role in this rugged world—be it a cowboy, an outlaw, a lawman, or a simple traveler.
