Red comes back after changing the past, only to realize how gravely it affected the present.
Max Hatter is a strange, dangerously charming Wonderland kid whose madness feels more playful than predictable. With a crooked grin, sharp wit, and an almost villainous delight in chaos, he treats rules like suggestions and finds amusement in everything. Flirtatious and unsettlingly clever, Max seems drawn to Emily's own growing unpredictability, constantly teasing her with knowing looks and mischievous remarks. Beneath his eccentric, almost mad demeanor lies someone who genuinely enjoys her company—like two beautifully disastrous storms that somehow understand each other better than anyone else.
The timeline was wrong. Not broken—wrong.
Not in obvious ways. Auradon still stood, classes still started too early, and people still whispered whenever a new VK walked through the gates.
But Red knew. Because she remembered. She remembered being an only child. She remembered being the troublemaker. She remembered being the one everyone expected to rebel. And now?
Everyone called her an HK. The responsible one. The "good influence." Which was ridiculous. And somehow, because of the changes made in the past…
She had a sister. Emily. Sweet, pretty, annoyingly nice Emily. Or at least— That's who Red thought Emily was.
When the new VKs from Wonderland arrived, everyone gathered outside.
And then she saw him.
Max Hatter.
The son of the Mad Hatter.
He practically sauntered into Auradon with all the grace of a hurricane.
His coat tails fluttered behind him, his hat sat at an angle that made absolutely no sense, and he wore the grin of someone who had already decided the rules were optional.
He was strange.
Beautifully, dangerously strange.
And everyone could tell.
Especially when he stopped walking.
Because Emily was standing nearby.
And Max immediately lit up.
"Oh-ho!"
He practically skipped over.
"My favorite clockwork daffodil!"
Red blinked.
Emily smiled.
"Hi, Max."
And to Red's horror—
Max grabbed Emily's hand and dramatically kissed the back of it.
"My Lady Lovely Teacup, my Duchess of Dandelions, my Princess of Peculiarities!"
Emily laughed.
"You're ridiculous."
"Correct!"
He beamed.
"I strive to be!"
And then—without a care in the world—he looped his arm around hers.
Like he'd done it a thousand times.
Red froze.
Chloe blinked.
"Is that…?"
"Absolutely not," Red interrupted.
But Max looked downright delighted.
"Emily!" he announced loudly. "I've missed your face terribly. My eyes were positively weeping and threatening mutiny!"
Emily giggled.
"It's been two days."
"Two days!"
Max gasped dramatically.
"Two days too many, my darling disaster!"
Red stared.
"...Darling disaster?"
Chloe slowly smiled.
"Ohhh."
"No."
"Red—"
"No."
Red brushed it off.
Whatever.
Emily was annoying.
Max was weird.
Maybe he'd flirt with everybody.
Maybe that's just how Wonderland kids talked.
Right?
Wrong.
Because the glances kept happening.
During class, Max would stare at Emily like she personally invented sunlight.
Later, Red finally cornered her.
"What are you doing?" she demanded.
Emily blinked.
"What?"
"With them!"
Emily frowned.
"The VKs?"
"Yes!"
Emily looked confused.
"They're my friends."
"Max Hatter is your friend?"
Emily hesitated.
And that hesitation was enough.
Red's eyes widened.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
"What?"
"You like him!"
Emily immediately turned red.
"I don't—"
"Oh, you absolutely do."
"No, I—"
"Emily!"
"He's weird!"
"Exactly!"
"He's insane!"
"YES!"
"And kind of evil!"
"YES!"
"And he talks like a broken storybook!"
"YES!"
"And he—"
"HELLOOOOO!"
Both sisters jumped.
Max Hatter himself appeared upside down over the back of the couch.
No one knew how.
No one wanted to ask.
He smiled brightly.
"There you are, Lovely Disaster!"
